The Week I Bought the Wrong Everything: A Fleet Buyer's Story

First week of January 2024. The email landed in my inbox at 9:47 AM. Our operations manager, Dana, had attached a list of “small requests” that turned out to be anything but small.

Replace air filters on the work vans. Order oil filters for the three delivery motorcycles. Upgrade the audio in the Honda CR-V. Swap out the leaking air compressor tank in the workshop. And “look into laser detectors” because two of our drivers had gotten speed citations.

  10. Get written confirmation of the part number from the vendor
  11. Calculate total cost including shipping and potential fees
  12. Re-read the checklist once before confirming the order

It sounds like a lot, but it takes about 15 minutes per order. And those 15 minutes have already saved us far more than I can measure.

The Prevention Mindset
