The short answer: start with five-year cost, not model name

If you’re comparing an Ingersoll Rand 7100 air compressor with an Ingersoll Rand 175 air compressor, don’t start by asking which is cheaper. Start by asking which one costs less to own. For our shop, the answer was the 7100. For another shop with higher continuous air demand, the 175 could easily be the lower-cost choice. The model doesn’t decide. Workload does.

I’m an office administrator, not an engineer. I’ve bought a lot of equipment over the last several years, and it took a few expensive mistakes to learn that purchase price is the least useful number on a compressor quote.

Why I stopped comparing sticker prices

One more thing: if a vendor claims a compressor will “pay for itself” in energy savings, ask to see the calculation. Under FTC guidance (ftc.gov), performance claims need to be substantiated. If the assumptions disappear when you ask questions, that tells you more than the sales pitch does.

What actually matters on a compressor spec sheet

Two numbers matter more than anything else: delivered CFM at the pressure your tools require, and duty cycle. Motor HP is a marketing number. CFM at 90 PSI is what runs your tools. If you put that kind of load on a smaller compressor, it runs past its duty cycle. Heat builds up, service intervals get shorter, and you replace it early. In that scenario, the larger machine is the lower total cost even with a much higher purchase price. The mistake is choosing by size alone or price alone instead of by actual load.
