Clore JNC660 Review, GPS Tracker 'Lifetime Platforms,' and GX550 Exhaust Notes
The 30-Second Version
After five years managing equipment orders for a 14-person auto shop, here's what I'd tell anyone doing the same job: buy the Clore Jump-N-Carry JNC660 for jump starting, skip any GPS tracker sold on a "lifetime platform," and don't spec a GX550 catback exhaust on a working vehicle. The first is the only piece of equipment I've never once regretted ordering. The second is the only contract term I now read line by line. The third is a $1,400 sound upgrade dressed up as a performance one.
Below is the reasoning—plus a short note on DSP car audio tuning, which is the one job I stopped paying shops to do.
A little context on who's writing this: I'm the office administrator for a 14-person shop in the Midwest. I manage all equipment and supply ordering—roughly $180K annually across 11 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, which means I get the fun job of explaining to both why we spent money on something.
The Clore JNC660: Still the Jump Starter I Recommend
We bought our first Clore JNC660 in October 2020. The second in 2022, when we added a service truck. Neither has been replaced. In a shop where techs treat tools like they're rented, that's the entire review.
Everything I'd read said budget jump packs were "fine for occasional use." In practice, "occasional" for us means 3-5 starts a week, all winter, in a parking lot that hits -10°F. Our cheap units died inside 18 months. Not dramatically—they just stopped holding charge and started sagging on cold cranks. One of them cost us a tow call on a Friday afternoon because nobody trusted it enough to try a second attempt.
Three things separate the JNC660 from the pile of units we killed before it, and only one of them is on the spec sheet:
- 425 cranking amps, not just 1700 peak. Peak amps is a burst number measured over a fraction of a second. Cranking amps is what actually turns an engine. Plenty of jump packs quote peak and stay quiet about cranking.
- Lead-acid, not lithium. Lithium is lighter and holds charge longer. But leave a lithium pack in a truck bed overnight in February and it stops cooperating. Lead-acid doesn't care.
- UL 2743 listed. Our commercial insurance requires it. A lot of the direct-to-consumer jump packs aren't listed at all—and that becomes your problem the first time something goes wrong.
What most people don't realize is how often "peak amps" gets compared across brands as if it means the same thing. It doesn't. If you're comparing two units, find cranking amps on both. If one doesn't list it, that's your answer.
One more thing, and it's the reason I still order from this brand: when I asked to buy two units for testing back in 2020, they shipped two. No MOQ conversation, no minimum-order upsell. Two years earlier, a different jump pack brand wouldn't quote us under 20 units. We're 14 people. We don't need 20 of anything we haven't broken yet. The vendors who took our small test order seriously are the ones still on the vendor list in 2026. The ones who needed a commitment before a quote? I don't remember their names, and I don't need to.
GPS Tracker "Lifetime Platforms": The Fine Print Problem
We added four service vehicles in 2023 and started shopping GPS trackers. The phrase that kept showing up was "lifetime platform access." Sounds like a one-time cost. It almost never is.
From the outside, "lifetime platform" sounds like the vendor is committing to keep the app running as long as you own the tracker. The reality is that every contract I read defined "lifetime" as the operational life of the device—as decided by the vendor. If they sunset the model, your "lifetime" ends on their schedule, not yours.
I checked the FTC's advertising guidance on this (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing), because ambiguous terms like "lifetime" are exactly what they police. The short version: claims have to be truthful and substantiated, and if a reasonable consumer reads "lifetime" one way, that's the standard the vendor gets held to. Not the reading buried in Appendix C.
My rule now: if "lifetime" isn't defined as a specific number of years in the contract, ask for it in writing or walk. We ended up with a tracker that just promised five years of platform access. Less exciting on the marketing page. Much easier to explain to finance.
GX550 Catback Exhaust: A Sound Decision, Not a Power One
A customer asked us to quote a catback exhaust on a 2024 GX550 last spring. He'd read somewhere that it would "unlock" horsepower.
The numbers said maybe 8-12 hp at the wheels. My gut said he'd be happy with the sound regardless of the dyno sheet. My gut was right—he bought it, he loves it, we made labor on the install. Good customer, good outcome.
But if you're considering a catback for your own fleet or shop vehicle, here's the honest version:
- Cost: $1,200-1,800 for a good stainless system, plus install labor.
- Gain: 5-15 hp on a naturally aspirated V6—roughly 2-4%.
- Sound: Better inside the cabin. Worse for anyone who shares a driveway with you at 6 AM.
Also check local noise ordinances before you order. Some states test exhaust dB at annual registration. What passes in Texas may not pass in California, where exhaust mods fall under CARB-adjacent rules.
Buy it for the sound. Don't buy it for the horsepower.
DSP Car Audio Tuning: I Stopped Paying for This
Three years ago I paid a shop $400 to tune the DSP in my own car. The result was decent—not $400 decent. Then I learned what the process actually involves:
- Play pink noise through each speaker.
- Measure the response with a calibrated mic (a miniDSP UMIK-1 runs about $120 and is the standard for this).
- Match the measured curve to a target curve.
- Adjust time alignment and crossover points by ear.
Steps 1-3 take an afternoon. Step 4 takes longer, but you can iterate in your own driveway instead of paying shop labor to do the same thing in small increments.
Caveat: this only works if you can actually access the DSP. Factory head units with locked processing usually need a vehicle-specific bypass harness. If a shop wants more than two hours of labor just to tune, ask what the mic and software cost—that's where the real work is happening.
Where This Doesn't Apply
Fair warnings on all of the above.
On Clore: if you're starting box trucks or running more than about 15 vehicles, the JNC660 is a floor, not a ceiling. Clore makes higher-output units that our shop doesn't need but heavier fleets might.
On GPS trackers: if you're running 50+ vehicles, the economics change. Enterprise vendors will negotiate per-unit pricing and platform terms you can't get as a small fleet. The "lifetime" trick is mostly a small-fleet problem.
On prices: everything above is a 2023-2025 reference point. What I paid isn't what you'll pay. Check current listings before you budget a dollar amount.
That's it. Five years in, the pattern holds: the stuff that lasts is boring, the stuff marketed hardest is usually the most negotiable, and the words "lifetime" and "unlock" are doing a lot of unpaid work in most spec sheets.
