A Quality Inspector's 8-Step Checklist for Buying Focal Car Audio, Radar Detectors & Diagnostic Tools

I'm a quality and compliance manager at an automotive electronics supplier. In practical terms, I review every product before it reaches our B2B customers—roughly 200 SKUs a year. In our Q1 2024 quality audit, I rejected 14% of first-article samples because the spec didn't match what the customer expected. Most of those cases weren't manufacturing defects. They were the gap between what the buyer assumed and what the spec sheet actually said.

So when customers ask what to check before ordering Focal car audio, a built-in radar detector, a Toyota Kluger tow bar, or an OBD2 scanner, I hand them the same checklist I use internally. It has eight steps. Here's the whole thing.

1. Verify Part Numbers Against the Vehicle, Not Just the Model Name

"Focal speaker" isn't a part number. Neither is "fits Toyota Kluger." I've sat across from a supplier who pulled two tweeters out of a box—same grille, same mounting depth—and told me they were identical. When I compared them side by side, the part numbers differed in the third digit. That digit changed the impedance curve and the crossover compatibility.

The checkpoint: confirm the exact Focal part number against the catalog for your vehicle's year and trim level. If you're sourcing a tow bar for a Kluger, the bracket that fits a 2022 model may not clear the 2024 reversing sensors even when the listing says "Kluger compatible." The model name sells the part; the part number proves it.

2. Match RMS Power, Not Peak Power

Why does this matter? Because peak power is a marketing number. RMS is what the system actually produces. If you're pairing a Focal amplifier with a Focal subwoofer car setup, the amp's RMS output at your target impedance should sit between 75% and 120% of the sub's RMS rating. That gives you headroom without cooking the voice coil.

The question everyone asks is, "How many watts?" The question they should ask is, "At what impedance, and continuous or peak?" A subwoofer advertised at 600W peak might only handle 200W RMS. Feed it 400W RMS and the voice coil overheats, the woofer starts distorting, and you'll be replacing it within a month. I've seen this exact failure on a 50,000-unit annual order line, and it cost us a $22,000 redo.

3. Check Impedance and Enclosure Volume Before Pairing

Focal subwoofers commonly come in 2-ohm and 4-ohm variants. Order the wrong one and the amplifier either produces less power or current-limits into protect mode. Most buyers focus on brand and size and completely miss the impedance spec. (Which, honestly, is understandable—it's buried on the second page of the datasheet.)

Also check the enclosure's internal volume in liters, not the box's outer dimensions. A subwoofer needs a specific air space for its rated frequency response. This is the most skipped checkpoint in installation orders I review—you can have the perfect amp and sub, and still get muddy bass because the box has too little volume.

4. Radar Detector—Verify Band Coverage and Real-World Filtering

For a built-in radar detector for a car, the sale isn't over when the unit is mounted. Depending on your region, the detector needs to cover K, Ka, and sometimes Ku bands. If your fleet crosses state or provincial lines, confirm the model covers the bands in every jurisdiction you operate in.

Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), claims like detection range and false-filter performance must be truthful and substantiated. But a marketing page isn't a spec sheet. What I want before approving a radar detector SKU is a live demo against a known false-alarm source—like adaptive cruise control on the vehicle itself. In my opinion, that test reveals more than any "max range" number on a box.

5. Tow Bar Installation—Check Load Ratings, Wiring, and Mounting Hardware

When a customer orders a Toyota Kluger tow bar installation kit, they usually check the trailer weight rating and then stop. The tongue load rating—how much downward force the trailer puts on the ball—is just as important. A bar rated for 2,000kg trailer weight with only 80kg tongue load will flex if your trailer setup puts 150kg on the ball.

Next: wiring. In our 2022 supplier audit, more than 60% of failed tow bar installations traced back to splice-in wiring harnesses, not the bar itself. The kit you order should include vehicle-specific T-harness connectors, especially on newer Kluger models with CAN-bus lighting. A universal splice kit is cheaper, but it's also the most common source of intermittent trailer light faults I see in warranty returns.

6. OBD2 Scanners—Know Protocol Coverage and Update Policy

How much are OBD2 scanners? Take this with a grain of salt, because pricing moves fast, but our 2025 purchase records show roughly three tiers:

  • Entry-level code readers that handle engine codes on most consumer cars: $30 to $80
  • Mid-range scanners with ABS, airbag, and live data: $100 to $250
  • Professional bidirectional tools with module coding and relearns: $400 and up

Three things matter more than price: protocol coverage (does it read all nine OBD2 modes plus manufacturer-specific codes?), live data rate in frames per second, and whether firmware updates are free or subscription-based. A $60 scanner is cheap until you meet a vehicle it can't communicate with. That's when the "savings" turns into a rushed dealership visit and a diagnostic bill.

7. Validate Serial Numbers, Packaging, and Warranty Terms

Counterfeit Focal amplifiers exist, and they're convincing at arm's length. I've inspected clones with almost identical heatsink machining. What gave them away: the serial number format didn't match Focal's documented sequence, and the weight was off by roughly 180g (surprise, surprise).

The checklist here: confirm the serial number format with the brand, weigh a reference unit if you have one, and read the warranty conditions before you order in volume. If the supplier says "we'll handle warranty through us," that's not a benefit—it's a signal they may be sourcing parallel imports that the brand won't honor.

8. Test One Unit Before Releasing a Full Order

When I ran a blind test with our technicians—same Focal component set, one from our verified stock channel, one from a gray-market listing—10 out of 12 picked the verified tweeter as "more crisp" without knowing which was which. The measured frequency response difference was minor on paper. In a car environment, it was obvious.

So before you commit to a bulk order, request a single first-article unit. Test it against the actual vehicle, not a bench demo. Writing "first-article testing before full order release" into your contract is standard practice for us. It's the same verification we apply to any large supplier order, whether it's speakers or tow bars.

Before You Order: Common Errors and Red Flags

A few things that show up in nearly every rejection report I write:

  • Assuming "universal fit" means "proper fit." Universal means clamps, zip ties, and adjustments. If you need a factory-looking install, universal is a warning, not a feature.
  • Price shopping the component while ignoring installation time and harness costs. A $40 saving on a subwoofer evaporates if it takes an extra hour to install.
  • Buying the highest-power option "for headroom" and then wondering why the amp goes into thermal protect. Power matching isn't a contest.

If you ask me, the most expensive mistake isn't a wrong part or even a counterfeit. It's silence after delivery—when nobody tests, nobody documents, and the mismatch only surfaces after installation. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. Honestly, that's better for you and better for us.
